Personalized Care for Tension, Sinus, Hormonal, Cervicogenic, Digestive, and Recurring Headaches
Overview
Recurring headaches can interfere with concentration, work, sleep, family life, and the ability to move through the day comfortably. Although headaches are common, the reasons they develop can be very different from one person to another.
Some headaches are connected to muscular tension, cervical dysfunction, jaw clenching, stress, or previous injuries involving the head and neck. Others are associated with sinus congestion, seasonal or environmental allergies, hormonal changes, digestive dysfunction, sleep disruption, inflammation, circulation, dehydration, or a combination of contributing factors.
At Blue Root, we do not treat every headache as though it has the same cause. We look closely at the location, sensation, timing, frequency, triggers, accompanying symptoms, health history, and patterns occurring throughout the rest of the body.
This allows us to create an individualized treatment plan that addresses both the headache and the underlying pattern contributing to its recurrence.
Symptoms
Headaches can present very differently depending on what is driving them. Some people experience pressure or tightness, while others have throbbing pain, facial pressure, visual sensitivity, or discomfort that begins in the neck and travels into the head.
Possible Causes
Recurring headaches rarely have only one contributing factor. A careful evaluation helps us recognize the relationships between the headache and the rest of the patient's health.
Tightness in the neck, shoulders, scalp, and jaw can contribute to pressure, restriction, and pain throughout the head. Forward-head posture, prolonged computer use, repetitive activity, and poor ergonomics can reinforce this pattern.
Joint restriction, muscular imbalance, fascial tension, or nerve irritation involving the cervical spine can refer pain into the back of the head, temples, forehead, or areas surrounding the eyes.
Inflammation, congestion, impaired sinus drainage, or chronic nasal irritation can contribute to pressure in the forehead, cheeks, face, or behind the eyes.
Seasonal allergies and environmental sensitivities can contribute to nasal congestion, immune activation, sinus inflammation, and recurring head or facial pressure. These headaches can become more noticeable during periods of high pollen, weather changes, or increased environmental exposure.
Menstrual cycles, perimenopause, menopause, and other hormonal changes can influence headache frequency, intensity, and timing.
Physical or emotional stress can increase muscular guarding, jaw clenching, sleep disruption, and nervous-system reactivity, all of which can contribute to recurring headaches.
Jaw clenching, grinding, muscular tension, and dysfunction involving the temporomandibular joint can refer pain into the temples, ears, face, neck, and head.
Digestive dysfunction, food sensitivities, blood-sugar fluctuations, irregular eating patterns, or other internal imbalances can contribute to headaches in some individuals.
Previous injuries involving the head, neck, jaw, or upper spine can contribute to muscular tension, joint restriction, impaired circulation, nerve irritation, and recurring pain—even when the original injury occurred years earlier.
Insufficient, irregular, or poor-quality sleep can lower the body’s threshold for headache triggers and make existing patterns more difficult to resolve.
Inadequate fluid or electrolyte intake can contribute to headache development, particularly during heat exposure, physical activity, illness, or changes in routine.
Our Approach
At Blue Root, we begin by identifying the pattern behind the headaches rather than treating the symptom in isolation.
We evaluate where the pain occurs, how it feels, when it appears, what worsens or relieves it, and what other symptoms accompany it. We also consider sinus and allergy symptoms, digestion, hormones, sleep, stress, nervous-system activity, muscular tension, circulation, posture, jaw involvement, and previous injuries.
Using Chinese medicine pattern discrimination together with detailed palpation and physical assessment, we determine which systems and structures require attention. Treatment is then customized according to what the individual patient's body is showing us.
Two people can arrive with the same diagnosis and require very different treatment strategies. Our goal is to reduce the frequency and intensity of the headaches while addressing the underlying factors that allow them to continue returning.
Therapies
The therapies below are commonly used in the care of headaches at Blue Root Health. Not every therapy is appropriate for every patient — your care plan is individualized based on your specific pattern, diagnosis, and goals.

Personalized according to the pattern driving the headaches. Treatment can address muscular and cervical tension, sinus and allergy-related inflammation, nervous-system dysregulation, hormonal patterns, impaired circulation, digestive contributors, and the effects of previous head or neck trauma.

Addresses the internal pattern contributing to recurring headaches. Depending on the individual, this can include sinus congestion, allergies, hormonal changes, digestive dysfunction, inflammation, impaired circulation, stress, or constitutional deficiencies.

Can be incorporated when muscular tension, fascial restriction, jaw tension, postural strain, or neck and shoulder involvement contribute to headaches. The session is customized according to the location of tension and the patient’s stage of care.

When recurring headaches are connected to seasonal allergies, environmental sensitivities, or chronic immune reactivity, Qi5 Allergy Treatment can be incorporated to address the allergic pattern contributing to sinus pressure and inflammation.

Can be incorporated when congestion, sinus inflammation, or a recurring pathogen-related pattern contributes to facial pressure and headaches. It is recommended according to the patient’s presentation and overall treatment plan.
