FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Beginning a new healthcare journey often comes with questions.
You may be unsure which service you need, whether Blue Root is the right place for your concerns, what your first visit will involve, or how different therapies may work together.
You do not need to understand every option before contacting us. Explore the answers below, or speak directly with the Blue Root team. We will listen to what you are experiencing and help you identify the most appropriate place to begin.

GETTING STARTED
You Do Not Need to Know Exactly Where to Begin
That is completely okay.
Many people contact Blue Root because they know something does not feel right, but they are unsure which service or practitioner would be most appropriate.
Begin by calling our team at 803-404-7575. We will ask what you are experiencing, what kind of support you are seeking, and whether you have a particular service in mind.
Based on that conversation, we can help guide you toward the most appropriate first step.
No.
You are welcome to explore our services before contacting us, but you are not expected to diagnose yourself or determine your entire care plan.
Blue Root offers many forms of care, and several may appear relevant to the same concern. Our team can help you understand the differences and identify the most appropriate place to begin.
All new patients must call 803-404-7575 before scheduling their initial appointment.
Blue Root welcomes new patients when the appropriate practitioner and service are available.
Because every person's needs are different, all new patients must speak with the Blue Root team before scheduling. This allows us to understand what you are seeking and help you begin with the right practitioner, service, and appointment type.
Call 803-404-7575 to begin.
A referral is generally not required to contact Blue Root or explore care.
However, certain health concerns, services, or circumstances may require medical records, diagnostic imaging, laboratory results, medical clearance, or coordination with another healthcare provider.
Our team will let you know if anything additional is needed before your appointment.
Yes.
Many patients come to Blue Root with an existing diagnosis, laboratory findings, imaging, or recommendations from another healthcare provider.
A diagnosis can provide important information, but it is not the only part of your story. Blue Root also considers how your symptoms developed, how different systems may be interacting, what treatments you have already tried, and how the concern affects your daily life.
Blue Root does not replace necessary emergency, primary, or specialist medical care. When appropriate, we encourage collaboration with the other professionals involved in your health.
THE BLUE ROOT APPROACH
Personalized Care Begins With the Complete Story
Blue Root looks beyond isolated symptoms to understand the complete person.
Rather than placing everyone with the same diagnosis into the same predetermined treatment plan, we consider the individual's health history, symptom patterns, lifestyle, stress, nervous-system function, emotional experiences, goals, and response to previous care.
Our approach brings together Chinese Medicine, Classical Chinese Medicine, Integrative Medicine, regenerative therapies, restorative services, and nervous-system support.
Not every person needs every service. Care is selected and adapted according to the individual.
Root-cause care means asking why a symptom may be occurring—not only how to temporarily quiet it.
This may involve exploring relationships among different symptoms, body systems, lifestyle patterns, stress, previous illness or injury, nutrition, nervous-system regulation, and other factors affecting the body's ability to function and recover.
Finding the root does not always mean finding one simple explanation. Health concerns are often influenced by several overlapping factors.
The goal is to understand those relationships and create a more thoughtful, individualized strategy.
Blue Root has evolved beyond a single category.
Chinese Medicine and acupuncture remain foundational to the practice, but Blue Root now brings together a broader range of clinical, regenerative, restorative, and transformational services.
The center is designed for people seeking thoughtful, personalized care that considers the physical body, emotional experience, nervous system, and the many factors that may influence health over time.
Not necessarily.
Two people may share the same diagnosis while experiencing different symptoms, contributing patterns, histories, and treatment needs.
Care at Blue Root is based on the individual—not solely on the name of a condition.
Even when two patients receive the same general service, the way that service is used may be different.
Yes, when clinically appropriate.
Some patients begin with one service. Others may benefit from a coordinated combination of therapies over time.
A care plan might include services that address different aspects of the person's needs, but adding more treatments is not automatically better. Recommendations should remain purposeful, manageable, and appropriate for the individual.
Your practitioner and the Blue Root team can explain how different services may complement one another.
YOUR FIRST VISIT
What to Expect
The structure of your first appointment depends on the service you are receiving.
For clinical services, the initial visit may include a detailed discussion of your primary concerns, health history, current symptoms, previous treatment, medications or supplements, lifestyle, and goals.
Your practitioner may also perform evaluations relevant to that service and explain the recommended next step.
Some appointments include treatment during the initial visit, while others focus more heavily on consultation and assessment.
The Blue Root team will explain what to expect when helping you schedule.
Bring anything that may help your practitioner understand your health history and current concerns.
Depending on the reason for your visit, this may include: a current medication and supplement list, recent laboratory results, relevant imaging or diagnostic reports, the names of physicians or specialists involved in your care, a list of major surgeries, injuries, or diagnoses, questions you want to remember to ask, and any required intake forms.
You do not need to bring every medical record you have ever received. If you are uncertain about what is relevant, ask the Blue Root team before your visit.
Wear comfortable clothing whenever possible.
For acupuncture, massage, bodywork, sauna, red-light therapy, or other physical treatments, clothing may need to allow access to particular areas of the body.
Professional draping and privacy should always be maintained when a service requires a patient to change or uncover a treatment area.
The team can provide service-specific guidance before your appointment.
For many services, it is helpful not to arrive extremely hungry or immediately after a very heavy meal.
However, preparation varies by appointment. Certain services, laboratory testing, injections, sauna sessions, or medical procedures may have more specific requirements.
Follow the instructions provided for your scheduled service. If you have not received instructions or are unsure, contact the team before your appointment.
Appointment length varies according to the service, whether it is an initial or follow-up visit, and what the appointment includes.
When scheduling, the Blue Root team will confirm the expected appointment length and any recommended arrival time.
Massage appointments are offered in 50- and 80-minute sessions.
TREATMENT AND RESULTS
Care Evolves With the Person
There is no universal number of appointments that is right for every person.
Recommendations may depend on: the nature and duration of the concern, the person's overall health, the complexity of the symptoms, the service being used, how frequently care can be received, the individual's response, and the goals of treatment.
Some people seek support for a short-term concern. Others require a longer period of consistent care.
Your practitioner should explain the initial recommendation and reassess it as your body responds.
Responses vary significantly.
Some people notice changes quickly. Others experience gradual improvement over a series of visits. Long-standing or complex concerns often require more time than recent or uncomplicated concerns.
Progress may also appear in different ways. The first change may involve sleep, energy, digestion, mobility, pain intensity, emotional regulation, or the length of time relief lasts.
No specific result or timeline can be guaranteed.
Not experiencing immediate change does not automatically mean that care cannot help, but it should be discussed.
Your practitioner may need to reassess the pattern, adjust the treatment strategy, modify the frequency of care, review additional health information, or determine whether another service or medical evaluation would be appropriate.
Blue Root care should remain responsive to what your body is communicating—not continue without reflection simply because a plan was initially recommended.
No predetermined plan should continue indefinitely without reassessment.
The purpose of ongoing evaluation is to understand what is changing, what remains unresolved, and whether the current strategy still makes sense.
Some patients transition from active treatment into less frequent maintenance or wellness care. Others complete a focused course of treatment and return only when new needs arise.
The decision should be based on the person's goals, progress, and clinical needs.
No.
Every person's body, history, condition, and response to care are different. Blue Root cannot promise that a particular treatment will produce a specific result.
Our commitment is to provide thoughtful, individualized care, communicate honestly, monitor your response, and adjust recommendations when appropriate.
ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE MEDICINE
Common Questions About East Asian Medicine
Most acupuncture needles are extremely thin, and many people feel little or no discomfort during insertion.
You may experience a brief pinch, heaviness, warmth, tingling, pressure, or a traveling sensation. These responses are generally different from the sensation of receiving an injection or having blood drawn.
Your comfort matters. Tell your practitioner if you feel anxious, sensitive, or uncomfortable so the treatment can be adjusted.
No.
Pain is one of the most familiar reasons people seek acupuncture, but Chinese Medicine has traditionally been used to understand and support patterns involving many areas of health.
People may explore acupuncture for concerns involving stress, sleep, digestion, women's health, fertility, headaches, nervous-system regulation, immune function, energy, recovery, and overall wellness.
Whether acupuncture is appropriate depends on the individual concern and clinical assessment.
No.
Chinese herbal medicine may be prescribed as a custom formula or as an established patent formula, depending on the person's presentation and clinical needs.
Custom formulas can be adjusted as symptoms and patterns change.
Always tell your practitioner about medications, supplements, allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and major medical conditions before beginning herbal medicine.
Do not stop or replace prescribed medication without consulting the prescribing medical provider.
Acupuncture may be used during pregnancy, but the practitioner must know that you are pregnant or may be pregnant before treatment begins.
Pregnancy changes which points, techniques, herbs, supplements, and services may be appropriate.
Always disclose your pregnancy status, fertility treatment, medications, complications, and instructions from your obstetric or reproductive healthcare team.

Yes, when appropriate.

No.

When appropriate, Blue Root encourages patients to maintain relationships with the other healthcare providers involved in their care.
Yes, when the patient requests it and appropriate consent is provided.

Blue Root respects patient privacy and will not share health information without the patient's knowledge and authorization.
