When Your Muscles Tire More Quickly Than They Should
Muscle fatigue occurs when muscles lose their ability to perform efficiently during physical activity or everyday movement.
Muscle fatigue is different from muscle weakness. Weakness reflects reduced strength. Fatigue reflects reduced endurance. Fatigue may result from inadequate recovery, poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, chronic illness, inflammation, hormonal changes, or reduced physical conditioning.
Recognizing the Signs
A Different Framework
In Chinese Medicine, muscle fatigue reflects a pattern of Spleen Qi Deficiency in which the muscles are not receiving adequate nourishment from Qi and Blood. The Spleen governs the muscles — when its transformative function is impaired, the muscles become weak, heavy, and easily fatigued even with modest exertion. Liver Blood Deficiency may also contribute, leaving the tendons and muscles undernourished.
Treatment focuses on strengthening Spleen Qi, nourishing Liver Blood, improving Qi and Blood circulation to the muscles, and addressing any patterns of Dampness or Stagnation that may be contributing to the sense of heaviness and fatigue.
