Hormone & Thyroid Health
Integrative care to support thyroid function, immune balance, and day-to-day well-being
Overview
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system targets the thyroid gland. Over time, this process can reduce the thyroid’s ability to produce adequate hormone, often leading to hypothyroidism.
Symptoms may develop gradually and can include fatigue, weight changes, cold intolerance, constipation, changes in hair or skin, and shifts in mood or cognition. Not everyone experiences the same presentation, and some patients feel unwell long before lab results become clearly abnormal.
At Blue Root Health, we assess the whole picture—your symptoms, history, lab results, nutrition, stress, sleep, and other health factors. Our aim is to support thyroid function, promote immune balance, and improve quality of life through personalized integrative care.
Working in coordination with your primary care clinician or endocrinologist, we help you build a plan that may include lifestyle strategies, targeted nutrition, Chinese Medicine–based treatments, and ongoing monitoring to track progress over time.
Symptoms
Persistent tiredness, sluggishness, or feeling unrefreshed even after adequate sleep.
Gradual weight gain or difficulty losing weight despite consistent habits.
Feeling unusually cold, preferring warmer environments, or having cold hands and feet.
Hair thinning or loss, dry skin, and brittle nails.
Slower digestion, bloating, or fewer bowel movements than usual.
Trouble concentrating, slowed thinking, or memory lapses.
Low mood, increased anxiety, irritability, or feeling emotionally flat.
Heavier, lighter, or more irregular periods; possible fertility challenges.
Muscle aches, joint stiffness, or generalized body soreness.
A sense of pressure at the front of the neck or visible thyroid enlargement.
Possible Causes & Risk Factors
Genetic susceptibility that increases the likelihood of developing thyroid autoimmunity (TPO/Tg antibodies).
A family history of thyroid disease or autoimmunity raises personal risk.
Hashimoto’s is more common in women, especially during postpartum and perimenopausal years.
Both excess iodine and iodine deficiency may influence thyroid autoimmunity in susceptible individuals.
Low selenium, iron (including ferritin), zinc, B vitamins, or vitamin D can affect thyroid hormone production and immune balance.
Elevated stress hormones and inadequate sleep may influence immune regulation and thyroid function.
Altered gut microbiome or increased intestinal permeability may contribute to immune activation.
Certain viral exposures or environmental chemicals may act as immune triggers in susceptible patients.
Conditions such as celiac disease or type 1 diabetes may occur alongside Hashimoto’s.
Some medications and prior neck radiation can affect thyroid health.
The Chinese Medicine Perspective
In Chinese Medicine, Hashimoto’s patterns may involve disharmonies such as Spleen Qi deficiency, Kidney Yang or Yin deficiency, Phlegm accumulation, and Liver Qi constraint. These patterns can manifest as fatigue, cold intolerance, brain fog, and changes in mood or digestion.
Assessment focuses on the individual’s complete presentation—energy, sleep, digestion, menstrual health, temperature regulation, and stress response—to identify root imbalances and the way they affect day-to-day symptoms.
Treatment aims to restore balance by supporting the body’s ability to transform and transport, nourish essential substances, reduce stagnation and phlegm, and regulate stress. The goal is to improve how you feel while supporting long-term harmony alongside any conventional medical management.
How Blue Root Approaches Hashimoto’s
We review your history, symptoms, and available labs (TSH, free T4/T3, TPO/Tg antibodies) to understand thyroid status and immune activity.
We collaborate with your primary care clinician or endocrinologist regarding medications while supporting you with integrative strategies.
We consider selenium, zinc, iron/ferritin, vitamin D, and protein adequacy while avoiding excessive iodine unless clinically indicated.
Treatment may include acupuncture, lifestyle guidance, and practices that help regulate stress, sleep, and the inflammatory response.
Digestive health and the microbiome can influence immune balance. We evaluate patterns that may benefit from targeted support.
Care is personalized and progresses at a sustainable pace. We track symptoms and labs over time to evaluate progress.
Therapies We May Recommend

May help regulate stress responses, support sleep, and modulate inflammation—key factors that can influence how Hashimoto’s is experienced day to day.

Individualized formulas may be used to support energy, digestion, temperature regulation, and constitutional balance according to Chinese Medicine patterns.

Primarily considered for coexisting musculoskeletal pain or trigger points that may worsen fatigue or sleep. It is not a treatment for thyroid autoimmunity itself and is used only when clearly indicated.

Occasionally considered for chronic ligament or joint instability when relevant. It is not a primary therapy for Hashimoto’s but may be appropriate for select coexisting pain conditions.

May reduce muscular tension, support relaxation, and improve sleep and well-being—helpful complements to a comprehensive thyroid care plan.
