The Chinese Medicine Perspective

How Chinese Medicine Views Psoriasis

In Chinese Medicine, psoriasis is most commonly associated with Blood Heat, Wind-Heat, or Blood Dryness, Blood Stasis — patterns in which the skin is unable to receive adequate nourishment and is instead driven by heat and inflammation from within. The Liver, Spleen, and Lung all play roles in the health of the skin and its underlying tissues.

Emotional stress, dietary factors, and constitutional Damp Heat, and Liver Qi Stagnation transforming into Heat are frequently contributing patterns. In chronic psoriasis, Blood Stagnation and Blood Deficiency may develop over time, contributing to thickened, dry, or persistent plaques.

Treatment focuses on clearing Heat and Wind from the Blood, nourishing Blood, supporting healthy Liver function, and addressing the digestive and immune patterns that allow inflammation to persist — treating the root cause rather than the skin alone.
