What is Transformational Breathwork?

Transformational Breathwork is a simple yet profound intentional and deep breathing technique that promotes physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It involves a specific and continual pattern of breathing that is deep, rhythmic, and connected. This approach allows you to bypass the conscious mind, which then releases stored and unprocessed trauma from the subconscious mind. By doing so, you allow your entire body to release any bent up energy from trauma that could be holding you back from your fullest potential.

Transformational breathwork sessions tap into our emotions, intuition, and inner consciousness so that we can access new levels of healing and self awareness by expanding and altering our state of perception. It facilitates emotional release, self-discovery, and personal transformation. It is only through the subconscious mind that we can rewrite our paths and heal fully through the breath.

How Does a Session Go?

First you’ll lie down on your back comfortably on a mat with your eyes closed.  Therapeutic music will start playing in the background as the session begins.  Then your instructor will guide you to begin repeating a variety of deep, rhythmic, and continual breathing techniques.  The key action here is to connect each inhale and exhale as if it’s a continual circle of breaths.  The session lasts roughly an hour and a half, but you will be breathing deeply for approximately 1 hour.   Crying, yelling, screaming, tingling sensations throughout the body, muscle tension and/or cramping (tetany) or any emotions that come up during the practice are allowed and encouraged.  These are all normal and a part of the healing process.  Rest assured this is a safe place to feel and release your emotions that have been blocked as there is no judgment.

With each session, you’ll peel more layers of trauma away and heal more and more over time with continued sessions.  Please know, while each session brings a great deal of healing, it is common to need more than just one session to completely erase trauma and transform.

What to Expect After

Some common feelings experienced after your session include calmness, lethargy, a sense of peace, new perspectives, and even new emotions and/or memories.  Most people report that they feel more open and connected, as well as possible pain relief after a breathwork session.  Some even feel lightness and release from the burdens that were previously carried and/or trapped.  You may feel as if a weight is lifted off your chest.  It’s recommended to drink plenty of water, and allow yourself to rest afterwards as the healing continues inside your body once the session ends.

Breathwork FAQs

What is breathwork?
Breathwork is a practice that involves conscious, controlled breathing techniques to promote relaxation, release stress, and enhance overall well-being. It can help regulate the nervous system, improve oxygen flow, and support emotional healing. At Blue Root Health, we offer Transformational Breathwork, which helps individuals release stored emotions, deepen self-awareness, and improve mental and physical health.
How to do breathwork?
Breathwork involves a variety of techniques, but a simple way to start is: Find a quiet space. Sit or lie down comfortably. Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6-8 seconds. Repeat for several minutes, focusing on the rhythm of your breath. At Blue Root Health, we offer guided Transformational Breathwork sessions to help clients learn and practice the most effective techniques for stress relief, healing, and personal growth.
What is Holotropic Breathwork?
Holotropic Breathwork is an intense, rhythmic breathing practice designed to alter consciousness and promote deep emotional healing. It involves rapid, deep breathing over an extended period, often combined with music, to reach an altered state of awareness. This technique can help release emotional blockages and trauma. At Blue Root Health, we offer safe and structured breathwork experiences that allow clients to explore deep transformation and healing in a supportive environment.
How to do Holotropic Breathwork?
Holotropic Breathwork should be practiced with a trained facilitator due to its intensity. The basic process includes: Lie down in a comfortable position. Begin deep, rhythmic breathing, inhaling and exhaling quickly and fully. Continue for 30 minutes to an hour, allowing emotions and sensations to arise naturally. Stay present and surrender to the experience, without overthinking. After the session, reflect on your experience through journaling or discussion. At Blue Root Health, we guide individuals through safe and transformative breathwork sessions to ensure a positive and healing experience.
When should you avoid breathwork?
Breathwork is generally safe, but there are certain conditions where caution is needed or it should be avoided: Pregnancy (some techniques can stimulate contractions) Heart conditions or high blood pressure Epilepsy or seizure disorders Severe anxiety or panic disorders Recent surgery or serious medical conditions If you have any medical concerns, consult a healthcare professional before trying intense breathwork. At Blue Root Health, we tailor breathwork practices to your individual health needs for a safe experience.
How does breathwork work?
Breathwork works by regulating the nervous system, increasing oxygen flow, and shifting consciousness. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Some deeper techniques, like Transformational Breathwork, can also help release stored emotions and trauma. At Blue Root Health, breathwork is used as a powerful tool for healing, self-awareness, and energy alignment, helping clients feel lighter, clearer, and more balanced.
What is breathwork meditation?
Breathwork meditation combines controlled breathing techniques with mindfulness to create a deep sense of inner peace. It often involves slow, intentional breathing patterns and is used to reduce stress, enhance self-awareness, and promote relaxation. At Blue Root Health, we incorporate Transformational Breathwork into meditation practices to help clients connect with themselves more deeply and achieve profound emotional clarity.
Is it safe to do breathwork on your period?
Yes, breathwork is generally safe to practice during your period, and it may even help with menstrual discomfort by promoting relaxation and reducing cramps. However, some intense breathwork techniques, such as holotropic breathing, can trigger strong emotional or physical responses. If you feel lightheaded or uncomfortable, it’s best to opt for gentler techniques like diaphragmatic or box breathing. At Blue Root Health, we tailor breathwork sessions to your unique needs, ensuring a safe and supportive experience.

In the sacred space of breath, we transmute the scars of trauma into the artistry of self-discovery.
